Written by Cath Hassell and Ben Coombes of ech2o, Green Roofs is a technical guide aimed at design professionals who require a concise understanding of the advantages of green roofs and the implications for design once specified. Some of the main issues explored in the publication include; build up of a green roof with detailed information about the different layers, choice of vegetation, advantages of biodiverse as opposed to extensive green roofs, structural implications, the effect of reduced cooling loads in summer; enhancement of biodiversity on the site, storm water attenuation and the role of green roofs as part of a SUDS system, greening of cities and lessening of the urban heat island effect. The guide also details retro-fitting of green roofs, costs and associated building decisions that are important to know.
